Culinary experiences in Abruzzo

Abruzzo is an especially beautiful tourist destination, known as the “greenest region” of Italy and lies between the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea. It has many famous peaks, winter resorts, these continuing with hills and finally ending with marveloud beaches. If you consider visiting Abruzzo, you can choose between many activities. You can discover the history of the region, visit monasteries and villages,you can learn about the local traditions of to see some interesting art works. If you like nature, you can make trips in beautiful scenery including the famous Aterno Valley, different natural reserves, or you can spend your days on one of the spectacular beaches.

No matter what kind of activity you prefer, you must make time to yourself to have some culinary experiences in Abruzzo.

Main courses

As Abruzzo has a diversified area, food may vary in the different parts of it. For example near the beach, the main course is obviously sea food. If you like fish and sea dishes, you should try some of the most famous ones including the scapece, which is a pickled fried fish, the guazetto also known as fish broth, which can actually be found in Teramo as well. Many fish courses are made with tomato.

And if we speak of Italy, we cannot forget from the culinary experiences the pastas. We mention two pastas that are famous in Abruzzo; one of them is the famous maccheroni alla chitarra, which is cut on a “guitar” with steel blades in thin stripes and the other one is the scripelle, which is a roll of pasta that you can find in different soups in Teramo.

In Abruzzo you can also find many meal products including famous and delicious salamis as ventricina, lonza and prosciutto you can also eat pork loin, lamb, kid, mutton or the delicious smoked meats from Mount Abruzzese. It is the perfect place for those who love meat.

Deserts

Italians have many delicious deserts and if you want to have a whole culinary experience in Abruzzo, you can not forget the deserts. In Abuzzo many people make deserts with almonds and honey, the most famous one is the nougat also known as torrone and we have to mention the confetti as well. This is a sugar coated almond, which was thrown at weddings in the past, then given as a wedding favor. The cicerchiata is a sweat crunchy ball, the mostaccioli is a delicious chocolate cookie and the bocconotto is a cookie that in Abruzzo can be filled with cocoa, cinnamon and almonds.

Drinks

There is no Italian mean withouth a good wine. Abruzzo has some wines that are famous around the world, this including the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Sangiovese and Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. You can find some organic wineries in the area as well. You shouldn’t leave Abruzzo without tasting some wines.
