There is a lovely town in the heart of Sicily where there is no mass tourism and nature is untouched. It is the dreamy town of Enna, which overlooks the valley of Dittaino and the neighboring hill towns and the rocky outcrops. Enna lies approximately 1000m above sea level and is the highest regional capital in the country, thus it has earned the nickname “Beautiful View” or “Belvedere”. Enna is also called the “navel” of Sicily because of its geographical position. Visit this wonderful town full of historical sites and a treasure trove of mythology. The best time to visit is during the spring or autumn season unless you are a fan of the hot weather in which case we recommend the summer season.

History and mythology

Italian traditions are quite fascinating and if you are interested to know more about them we suggest you start the tour in Enna where you can learn about the traditional Sicilian life. Enna has always been an important agricultural center where the majority of the Italian grain has been cultivated and Italian pasta has been produced. So if you have a pack of pasta of Italian origin there is a high possibility that it came from Enna.

Some believe that the land is rich in grain thanks to the goddess of the earth and grain, called Demeter. It is said that near Enna there is a lake called Pergusa where Demeter’s daughter, Persephone was taken by Hades to make her the queen of the underworld. Visit the town of Enna and feel the mythical atmosphere, which can be literally touched during the spring in festival season.

Best time to visit

As it was mentioned the most exciting time of the year in Enna is the spring season when Easter and other festivals take place in town. If you would like to learn about and experience Sicilian traditions and customs visit during Easter and watch the grand procession when all the people dress up in hoods and capes. We also recommend the early summer season. On the 2nd of July you can attend the festival of Maria Santissime della Visitazione.

This way you are not tied to schedules and public transport. However consider beforehand that it is not easy to drive in Sicily. You will need all your wits and logistic strategy skills! Accommodations are easier to find in the coastal area but if you check out the options you will probably find a few decent places.
