This beautiful neighborhood is located only a few minutes away from the airport by bus, also a few minutes away from downtown and about 10-15 minutes from Mondello beach. There are several sights and attractions to see around Palermo and as we narrow it down a bit, in Via Libertá. Go for a walk in the surrounding parks, on hike at Mount Pellegrino or visit St. Rosalie’s shrine and the cavern of Addaura.

Green area – Favorita Park

Laying in the shadows of Pellegrino Mountain you will find La Favorita, also known as the Royal Park. This area is covered with vast woodlands which used to be the hunting estate of the royal family. If you wander across you might still be able to see a few migratory birds and rabbits here and there. The Scruderia which used to be the royal news is now turned into an office. There is a palatial estate called Villa Niscemi which is also part of the park and it is the official residence of the mayor.

Saint Rosalie’s Shrine on the mount

Mount Pellegrino, which literally means mount of the pilgrim, offers a spectacular view of Palermo city and the sea that surrounds it. The mountain is mostly popular and famous for the shrine of Saint Rosalie which can be found near the peak among the stone pines dotting the area. Rosalie was a medieval saint who is said to be of Norman origin. She lived up in the mountains and led a solitary life. Several miracles are connected to her. Visit the sanctuary located on the summit and see where she lived.

Village of Addaura

Also located near Pellegrino you can visit Addaura, a little fishing village which is also the location where the Addaura Cavern can be found. Inside there are prehistoric engravings and drawing which were discovered in the middle of the 20th century. The drawings prove that humans lived in Palermo in earlier times.
